"Scottish Kings" by Gordon Donaldson, 1992
“Before Mary Queen of Scots and King James VI, who were the Scottish monarchs? In the procession of five Jameses one king might appear scarcely distinguishable from another. And before the Stewarts? Apart from Robert the Bruce, the early kings seem shadowy or even semi-legendary figures, but a royal line can be traced back, far beyond Duncan and MacBeth, to the Fergus who came over from Ireland about 500 A.D. Although the old dynasty died out in the thirteenth century, the monarchy remained the treasured symbol of national unity. The vacant throne, occupied first by John Balliol (the protege of Edward I) and then by the patriot Robert Bruce and his son, passed in 1371 to the house of Stewart.”
Hardcover with dust jacket, excellent condition.
